Top excuses to get in shape

Isn't it amazing how often we say things like, "As soon as the Holidays are over I am really going to buckle down and get fit and work out", or maybe "Things are so stressful right now. But I will definitely be starting my diet tomorrow"?

As a personal trainer I have seen it all. Nearly every day I am confronted with people who tell me how badly they want to get into better shape. They may want to get rid of their gut, drop a few pounds, get stronger or increase their muscle tone. Any ideas what their response is to this question?

"Because you want it so much, why not start now? I mean it. We can start to make it happen right this moment. Let's start eating the right food and getting fit - right now". I will tell you the most common response is for them to start making excuses. After all, it just so happens that the timing isn't quite right, but... Yes, there always seems to be a 'but', and it leads to not taking action.

Hold on! I'm not an idiot! Let's call it what it is - an excuse! And then another one, and another, and so it goes. Look, don't try to explain to me why you can't do it. I can see what's wrong; you know it and I know it. Remember, you are the one looking for help. Yep. You have to stuff your face with garbage because you need to put a new roof on the house. You can't get to the gym because you might have to work overtime, and why should you pay for a membership if there is a chance you may not get to use it? It's quickly becomes a downward spiral that leads to worse health and more excuses.

Now here is something to think about. Everybody that is physically fit is just as busy as you. However, they are able to make the time needed to get themselves fit and healthy. Think about. Deep down we all have a lot more in common, but those who are fit have this difference...

They don't make excuses - They make time!

Promise yourself you will start doing the same thing - right now. If you want it bad enough you will make the time. You have to decide what your priorities really are. If you don't change, and keep on making excuses, then you will never get in shape - it will always be a struggle.

I make no apologies for sounding tough. Perhaps it is this kind of approach that will get you to realize your excuses have been holding you back. And if better health results from a change in your thinking; it was worth it. Don't get me wrong, I've made excuses too and there were many times I wish someone would have been getting tough with me.
