Losing fat for
visible abs
We are constantly barraged with images of svelte super-models
sporting well-defined abdominal muscles, otherwise known as 'six-pack abs'. Having a nice set of abs is consider a hallmark of fitness and
beauty. Perhaps that explains the other thing we are barraged with: an endless supply of advertisements for the latest exercise machine that
targets our abs. Well, the word 'machine' would be better said as 'gimmick', because in reality you don't need special ab machines to get your
own six-pack.
To achieve this supposed ideal will take a lot of commitment, so
be sure it is something you really want. There are two main things you must do. 1) You must reduce the layer of fat that covers your abdominal
region. This allows your muscles to show through. 2) You must define those muscles. But it doesn't matter how defined those muscles are if
they are still covered with flab.
That is the reason why the latest ab machines don't work. They
cannot reduce fat. In fact, it questionable as to whether they can really build muscle, but that's a different story. And don't even think
about any magic pill that makes such claims. They don't burn fat or build muscle at all.
The first step to six-pack abs is to reduce your overall body
fat. It is impossible to loose fat from just one part of your body, so it's possible it will take a lot of work to get the abs you want. Using
a two-pronged approach of diet and exercise will yield the fastest results. But the exercises may not be what you think.
First let's look at diet. Getting rid of the layer of fat over
your midsection allows the underlying muscles to show through. Sorry, but there is no fad diet here. You will have to eat fewer calories than
you expend. Eating a wide range of healthy foods is important as well. You are not dieting, but creating an eating plan that you can stick to
for life.
When it comes to exercise, conditioning will go farther towards
six-pack abs then cardio training. That's not to say you should avoid cardio training (it still has its place), it's just not vital to
developing well-defined abs. You need to build muscle. This will also help burn calories around the clock and improve your overall
definition.
The best way to build muscle is through resistance training.
Lifting weights or weight machines will give the fastest results. But any exercise that works the major muscle groups with some sort of
resistance will go a long way toward getting positive results.
Regardless of what the latest infomercials tell you, there is no
quick fix to get six-pack abs. It will take work, commitment and lifestyle changes. Has hard as it may be to get them it is just as easy to
lose them. So these are changes that you will be making for life - in the best sense of the word.
