A good meat!!!

Scientific evidence has shown that omega-3 fatty acids are loaded with health benefits. Of course, everybody knows that the best sources for these omega fatty acids are salmon, sardines, and flax - right? Yes, but there are other sources including chia, kiwi, some eggs and grass-fed beef. That's right! Beef.

(For the sake of brevity we will use the term grass-fed beef, but venison, lamb and buffalo that have been raised this way have the same benefits. )

There is also another aspect of omegas that some people are not aware of. And that is that the ratio between omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. And grass-fed beef tends to have a more ideal ratio. Also, there is no fishy aftertaste, and there are fewer contaminants like PCBs, mercury and other nasty stuff that plagues some fish.

By the same token you have to be sure that you are selecting organic grass-fed beef that has not been treated with hormones or antibiotics, as that would create the same possible problems associated with fish. The good news is that most grass-fed beef is, by default, organic anyway.

An easy way to think about it is this: If we stick to the type of diet we were meant to eat, we tend to be healthier. There were no candy bars, potato chips, or corn dogs when we first appeared on this planet. So, it follows that when animals eat the type of diet they were naturally made to eat, they will be healthier as well. And...if we select this type of meat for our diet then we will be making a healthier choice.

Cattle that have a diet rich in grains and soy have lower levels of the more desirable omega-3, and higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids. While whole grains and soy are very healthy for people, they do not have the same effect on cattle, nor their meat.

Not only does grass-fed beef end up higher in omega-3s, but it also has more CLA than its grain/soy counterparts. CLA may be helpful in building muscle and burning fat. How about that? Eat your steak and lose weight! That may be a stretch, but compared to factory raised beef it's not completely inaccurate.

Now that you know this information, you may be ready to get some on your next trip to the grocery store. To be blunt, it can be very difficult to find grass-fed organic beef at a normal grocery store. If you find one, consider yourself lucky. You may have to search for it, request it from the store manager, or find a specialty store that carries it. One word of caution: it may be fairly easy to find 'organic' beef, but you need to make sure that it is also grass-fed.

Before long you will be enjoying the healthiest meat available. Sinking your teeth into a succulent and guilt free filet mignon is a pleasure that is hard to beat. And you are doing your body a favor too.
